“Before I was a developer and team leader at ASML. But I chose to work with technology and people.”

- Karin, teacher of ICT and Technology

Before I worked for ASML as a developer and team leader. I chose a job at Fontys so that I could work with technology and people. And for the variety, because I now teach network technology, mathematics, and design patterns. I also travel abroad with the students. They gain knowledge overseas, but more importantly they build their future professional networks..

It’s a job with lots of busyness and moments of rest. There’s little in between. It’s definitely not that lazy teacher’s existence that some people are so condescending about. Fortunately, you can sleep in every now and then. You have to like that variety, because it’s really not a 9-5.

When I was still working at ASML and meeting Fontys students, I already found them independent. When I came to work here, I saw the huge difference between first and fifth semester students. What progress! The fifth semester students have already worked for and with companies, and are a lot more mature. This shows how valuable it is that a study programme also looks outside and collaborates with companies to tackle innovation.

I conduct a lot of practical research with my students. With results that really benefit us or other groups. I go home with a smile at the end of the day when I know I’ve been able to convey my enthusiasm about a topic.
